It is the home of the United States Army's 5th Special Forces Group, as well as units from the 101st Airborne Division. The airfield is known for its unique dual-runway layout, having two runways that measure 10,000 feet in length. The airport also serves as a hub for rotary-wing aircraft operations, with its two helipads located to the south of the main runways. Campbell Army Airfield has a rich history, having been established in 1943 during World War II as a US Army Air Forces training facility.
