Maxwell Air Force Base

Maxwell Air Force Base is a United States military installation located in Montgomery, Alabama. It is the headquarters of Air University, a major component of Air Education and Training Command, and is the U.S. Air Force's center for Joint Professional Military Education. The base is named after Second Lieutenant William C. Maxwell, a native of Atmore, Alabama who was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross after being shot down in a B-24 Liberator bomber over Austria in 1944. Maxwell AFB is home to the 42d Air Base Wing, the largest wing of the Air University system. The base's host unit is the 42d Air Base Wing, which provides services and support for all units on the base, as well as for any transient aircrews, aircraft, and other personnel. The base also houses the 42d Medical Group, which provides medical care for military and civilian personnel, and the 42d Mission Support Group, which provides all other base support services. In addition to its educational and support missions, Maxwell Air Force Base also serves as a major freight and passenger hub, with a large number of military, civilian, and commercial aircraft making use of its runways every day. With its strategic location, Maxwell AFB is an important part of the U.S. military’s global operations and a vital asset to the U.S. Air Force.
